Managing Work-Life Balance When Working Remotely

Managing Work-Life Balance When Working Remotely

How to Avoid Burnout, Stay Motivated, and Thrive as a Digital Nomad

Remote work can feel like a dream – freedom, flexibility, and the ability to work from a beach in Bali or a café in Stockholm. But if you’re not careful, that dream can easily slip into a blur of late nights, endless notifications, and emotional burnout. We know, because we’ve been there.

As twin sisters who left behind the rigid routines of teaching and travel consulting to start working in digital marketing, we wanted more than a change – we needed balance.

In this post, we’ll explore how to really manage your work-life balance as a remote worker or digital nomad, using six key pillars:

  • lifestyle
  • balance
  • emotions
  • healthy habits
  • motivation
  • burnout prevention

Create Your Ideal Lifestyle

It sounds like it is too good to be true, right?! We felt the same way… How can we create our ideal lifestyle while working remotely? The beauty of remote work lies in the freedom to create a lifestyle that works for you. But freedom without structure can lead to chaos.

Set Clear Boundaries Between Work and Life

  • Define your work hours: This might mean working remotely from 9–5, or working in time blocks throughout the day.
  • Time blockers: We schedule gym, meal prepping, walking, studying and deep work sessions in our calendars. Ticking them off feels great!
  • Use physical cues: Even if you’re working remotely from a studio apartment, designate your remote workspace to help your brain switch into “work mode” and “sleep” mode.
  • Communicate availability: Let your clients or team know your remote working hours (and stick to them).

You are allowed to say no…

We have put in the work to learn how to say no and create healthier work life balance which is only beneficial for yourself and your employer.

Learning to set clear and healthy work/ life boundaries allows you to show up at work and show up as your authentic self in your everyday life. It needs to be equal – you can’t have the ratio unbalanced. One will eventually cave in and collapse in one or both areas.

There are plenty of new technologies like Google Calendar, Clockify and Harvest to keep track of how you spend your time working remotely.

Balance: It's Not About Doing Everything, It's About Doing What Matters

We used to believe balance meant doing everything perfectly, until we realized it’s actually about doing what matters most in each season of life.

Schedule In Both Work and Rest

  • Block out personal time: Treat self-care and breaks like meetings – you wouldn’t cancel on a client, so don’t cancel on yourself.
  • We are both highly sensitive people, so after meetings, we need to set time to unwind and debrief – this sometimes means staring into space or going for a 5 minute walk.
  • Work in zones: For example, batch tasks like emails in the morning, deep work in the afternoon, and admin tasks in the evening.
  • Being sisters, we are THE SAME in our work ethics. We prefer to check emails, prioritize tasks in the morning. And being creatures of habit, this rarely changes, unless there is an event to get to etc.

Make Time for Non-Work Passions

  • Take up art classes, learn a new hobby, or volunteer at a local animal shelter.
  • We are really enjoying playing Padel – great workout and loads of fun with friends.
  • Tap into something you’ve always wanted to but felt you never had the time.
  • These experiences enrich your life and recharge your creativity.
  • Visit the coffee shop that you’ve saved on your Instagram.

Real question for you – What are YOUR non-work passions? Do you have any? Think about your childhood & let’s bring some childhood energy back into your life!

When you have such an intense job one sometimes loses interests / has lack of time & energy for personal interests. But why must work take up your whole life? We are not on earth to work our whole lives away! So seriously think about your non-work passions and when you can incorporate this into your weekly routine.

We love to exercise, cook, travel, study, read, go for drives to explore different parts of our country (and to get coffee – maybe too often).

For those feeling adventurous and have more time to explore South Africa and Africa, get some inspiration from our blogs below.

Perhaps considering a 5 day trip to the Victoria Falls, or a trip up South Africa’s West Coast to Langebaan? I am sure you have heard of Churchhaven and Kraal Baai, two spectacular beaches inside the West Coast National Park.  For those who are time restricted, you can base yourself in Langebaan and do day trips from there.

Emotions: Listening to Your Body, Mind & Mood

Being a teacher, I was constantly surrounded by children, parents and colleagues.  Having transitioned away from being a teacher in the classroom, to working remotely in digital marketing, I am learning more and more about my emotions and listening to what my mood means.

I have taken the time to learn more about myself and what my body requires to refuel and get through the busier times of the year, for example exams and marking at school.

Having never worked remotely before, it is a new ball game for me. Remote work can also feel isolating – especially when you’re in a new country, work alone, or far from loved ones.

Stay Emotionally Connected

  • Check in with yourself:  Journaling or using mood-tracking apps like Daylio or your every day diary can help you notice emotional patterns. Since being on our health and wellness journey, I find it extremely important to track my sleep patterns and try to figure out the reasons for waking up in the night and not having a solid sleep.
  • Find community: If you have any colleagues that work in your area, that’s a score! Make sure to reach out to them to work remotely together or a quick coffee chat once in a while. Create a healthy working environment where you can thrive.  And if that means joining coworking meetups for those in your industry, Facebook groups or Slack channels. There are plenty out there, you just need to find the right one for you.

Don’t be afraid to talk about your mental health with a professional.

Your emotions and feelings are valid.

Healthy Balance: Habits That Fuel Your Work & Life

We’ve learned the hard way that double lattes and croissants only get you so far. Real productivity is powered by healthy habits.

Prioritize Your Physical Health

  • Move your body – stretch, walk, dance, or try online yoga. We’re so blessed with the amount of online options that are out there! So please, no excuses here.
  • Stay hydrated and eat nutrient-dense meals, even when you’re hopping time zones. Being insulin resistant, we plan our meals and usually eat around the same times for blood sugar control. Our go-to-snack while on the go, is the Future Life Lite Peanut Butter Crunch. This protein bar and an apple is our 3pm snack winner!

Build a Sustainable Routine

  • Create a start and end ritual for your workday (e.g., light a candle, write your to-do list).

We always end off our day by putting notes for the next day / week, so we can action them the next morning. After work, we usually get our steps in and talk about our day, come home to cook & eat dinner. We make sure the lights are dimmed, the volume of the TV / music is calm, in order to set us up for a great night’s rest.

Then I’m sure many of you are like this too.. – TV time, then cellphone bed time, then actual bed time around 9:45pm. Yes, we know that we’re supposed to wind down without screens to signal to your body it’s time to rest, but sometimes you just get taken away with all the scrolling on social media platforms.

Motivation: Finding Your "Why" (Even on the Hard Days)

Motivation fluctuates – especially when you’re your own boss. That’s why you need to regularly reconnect with why you chose this lifestyle in the first place. Remember those days of commuting to your office in the dark, wintery seasons? Empathise with your younger self and remember to be kind to them 🙂

Create a Vision That Fuels You

  • Write down your “why” and post it somewhere visible. Think mood board / book / wall.
  • Set short and long-term goals: maybe it’s building a 6-figure freelance business or visiting 10 countries in 12 months. Let’s visualise both please?!

Celebrate Small Wins

  • Finished a big project? Treat yourself. Sushi is our way to say “well done for this week” or “well done for not crying today”.
  • Got a new client? Share it with your community (or us – DMs always open!). We’re all about celebrating the wins! We’re honestly rooting for you too!

Burnout: Recognize It Before It Wrecks You

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight – it’s a slow fade. We burned out while working traditional non remote jobs, and we’ve learned how to recognize the signs earlier now.

Make sure to know some of the signs that lead to burn out. This can prevent things from going to far.

Signs You Might Be Burning Out:

  • Constant fatigue, even after rest
  • Cynicism or detachment from your work
  • Feeling emotionally numb or anxious
  • Sleep issues

How to Recover:

  • Take a real break. Disconnect from work and devices.
  • Be in nature.
  • Reconnect with your “why” (again).
  • Delegate or reduce your workload if possible.
  • Chat to HR and share your concerns – don’t be like our younger selves and quit the job!
  • Take your PTO (paid time off) you deserve. And don’t spend it at home either… you will most likely end up opening your laptop which is a big no no.
  • Book the holiday that you have been delaying.

You Don’t Have to Hustle Harder - Just Smarter

Remote work is a tool – not a destination. The goal isn’t just to work from anywhere, but to live fully while doing work that matters. By prioritizing balance, emotional wellbeing, and healthy routines, you’ll not only avoid burnout – you’ll thrive.

We hope you find your inner child and can’t wait to hear about your successes soon!

Lauren and Julia are twin sisters from Cape Town, South Africa, sharing their travel adventures & showcasing what South Africa and other countries have to offer. They are passionate about travel, wildlife, conservation, being surrounded by nature & holistic well-being. They are both currently working fully remotely - Lauren is a travel guru - her previous industry, before moving over to digital marketing. Julia is a qualified teacher and is currently working for a digital agency too! Lauren does the travel logistics and web development, where Julia does the travel blogging & finances (if it wasn’t for Julia, Lauren would be on holiday all the time). Their travel blog covers anything from travel tips, guides & to do’s, wine farm spots & them visiting their favourite coffee shops (they are both creatures of habit, so you’ll find them obsessing over the good coffee cafes).
