Free Things to Do in Cape Town for Your Birthday in 2026
Looking for what to do in Cape Town for your birthday?
Is your birthday coming up soon & you’re actually not excited because you really don’t want to spend it with your colleagues? (No offence to our colleagues – I’m sure they would agree with us here!) 🤣
If you are wondering what to do in Cape Town for your birthday, you’ve found the right blog! We suggest these birthday activities in Cape Town for you to choose from, ranging from adventurous to chilled. From free Table Mountain trips, aquarium visits, wine safaris, adventure parks – you’re bound to have a great day. If you are doing this solo, with your siblings, family, friends or a romantic celebration, this guide covers the greatest Cape Town birthday ideas.
There is just so much excitement about taking PTO and celebrating your birthday in Cape Town. We previously worked on our birthdays and realised how much you miss out on celebrating life fully! We have only spent 1 year apart on our birthday (while I lived in Sweden) & made a pact to make a plan to be together on our birthdays going forward – no matter where we are in the world!
Life is so short, so spoil yourself and live your life. What’s even better, is that we are so blessed with getting freebies in Cape Town for our birthdays – last year, we went up Table Mountain & gave us the idea to share other free ideas for you to also enjoy.
Of course, we know that we get freebies, and then sometimes need to spend money to get to the venue or purchase other items too. Take it or leave it – start saving in advance so you can make the most of your day.
Here’s our ultimate birthday guide for things to do in Cape Town for free on your birthday – let us know which one you choose! #offtwowanderbirthdayoutings
Things to Do in Cape Town for Your Birthday
Looking for things to do in Cape Town for your birthday? We’ve rounded up some of our favourite birthday freebies and experiences around the city. These ideas are perfect for locals and visitors looking for unique birthday activities in Cape Town.
1) Cable Car Ride up Table Mountain
One of the most iconic things to do in Cape Town for your birthday is taking the cable car up Table Mountain. The views alone make it a memorable birthday experience.
This is really a thing! For our birthday last year, we took the Cable Car up Table Mountain & had so much fun being tourists in our own city. The Table Mountain Cableway offers a free return ticket to South African citizens during their birthday month – valid any day within that month & must be collected in person at the ticket office.
Our tip: Have a look at the weather forecast – you of course want to have views and take memorable pics. We are very fortunate to get lovely sunny days in winter!
NB: Don’t forget your SA ID
Sidenote: Our birthday is in May & it is chilly at the top, so be sure to dress in layers & wear comfortable shoes. The Cable Car will be closed if the weather isn’t suitable conditions, so be open minded for last minute changes.
If you REALLLY want to spoil someone, consider making a hotel reservation and booking a night or two at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa – the mountain and ocean views are incredible!

2) Movies at Ster-Kinekor
Sometimes the best way to forget about life’s stresses is to sit in a movie house, eat your large popcorn, eat all the snacks that you never eat and immerse yourself into the movie.
PS: When I got retrenched from my job in 2022, I was so distraught that Lauren didn’t know what to do with me, so we went to watch the Bob Marley movie – best decision ever & one core memory that will forever stay with me.
Anyways, sign up for Ster-Kinekor’s loyalty programme to get a free movie ticket for your birthday. This is valid for 30 days from your birthday, you must be registered SK Club Members & have watched a movie at least once before. Get your tickets online or at the kiosk – if you are not sure, call or email the team for more information.
Adventure in the day & end off at the movies? Sounds like a great plan!
For those feeling adventurous and have more time to explore South Africa and Africa, get some inspiration from our blogs below.
Perhaps considering a 5 day trip to the Victoria Falls, or a trip up South Africa’s West Coast to Langebaan? I am sure you have heard of Churchhaven and Kraal Baai, two spectacular beaches inside the West Coast National Park. For those who are time restricted, you can base yourself in Langebaan and do day trips from there.
3) Cape Wheel Ride
Wondering what to do in Cape Town for your birthday with spectacular views? The Cape Wheel is a fun and relaxing experience to enjoy the views of Cape Town from above.
If you’re living in Cape Town, or visiting, this is an experience you need to have at least once in your lifetime! The Cape Wheel has enclosed cabins that slowly rotate, allowing you to enjoy views overlooking Granger Bay, Robben Island, Table Mountain and Signal Hill.
PS: There are 2 cabins that are wheelchair friendly.
**Please note that the free ride may only be redeemed on the day of your birthday.
Keep an eye out for their specials – senior discounts, birthday deals, school excursions and sky dining picnics. Dinner at the V&A Waterfront afterwards?
4) Two Oceans Aquarium Outing
If you’re looking for indoor birthday activities in Cape Town, the Two Oceans Aquarium is a fantastic option for animal lovers and families.
What’s my age again?? Age is just a number, so don’t feel like you can’t do the “child-like activities”. Live with an open heart & how you feel doing certain activities, and not how you think people are going to judge you. Our favourite part of the aquarium, besides living through the eyes of our nephews, is seeing the penguins.
Fun fact – I actually wanted to study Marine Biology after High School, but didn’t have Science as a subject… so teaching it was. We grew up with brothers body boarding every weekend, so we naturally joined them. Spending time at Big Bay / Melkbos every weekend is our childhood core memory.
The Two Oceans Aquarium birthday special runs for the calendar month of your birthday. E.g, 22 May is your birthday, you can visit from 1 May to 31 May. This birthday deal is only for South African residents, so take your ID with you to the ticket office when you visit them. Contact the Two Oceans Aquarium Team if you need support & enjoy!
There is a Bootleggers coffee shop where you can have a bite to eat before or after the Aquarium. If you prefer another coffee spot in Cape Town, here are other options to look at.
5) Zeitz Mocca Museum
The Zeitz MOCCA museum showcases & celebrates local and international art. The art isn’t the only masterpieces – the building has a story itself. The building used to be grain towers which were decommissioned & turned into the museum.
Visit the Zeitz MOCCA during your birthday month to learn more about art and the stories behind the artwork. If you really want to be fancy, visit the Ocular Lounge on Level 6 for cocktails, fine wines & delectable foods (with views out of this world!)

6) Hop-on Hop-Off City Sightseeing Bus
Not sure what to do with the kids for birthdays? This one is for them – well you can save if you’re a parent…Kids between the ages of 4-17 get a free 1 day Classic Hop-on Hop-Off ticket for their birthday & a friend between the same ages can join them too!
Make sure to look out at the details for this special – visit their website to register your child at least 2 weeks before their birthday.
Not a parent? Same. But we love the idea of being a tourist in our own city and tick off bucket lists in 1 day. Being driven around, educated on the journey & stopping off at the stops of your choice, sounds very ideal.
Adults: There isn’t a birthday special for us here, but we can take advantage of the Cape Town Winter Family Special, available to South African citizens from 4 May – 23 September.
If you are planning on visiting your family and friends for their birthday in Cape Town, make sure to look at our two Cape Town itineraries:
7) Durbanville Wine Safari
You had us sold us wine and safari! We’re so lucky to live in Cape Town, being surrounded by so much natural beauty and the stunning wine farms that come with it. Cape Town is rich in suitable soil, with Durbanville being one of the many wine routes for us to experience.
This one has rules though – each free birthday ticket must be accompanied by at least 1 paying guest on the same booking. When booking online, select “FREE BIRTHDAY TICKET”. Contact the team for your queries.
PS: Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch also has a safari, which is so much fun! They do not have a birthday special, but definitely worth the experience.
If you are feeling a bit more adventurous and want to explore to other wine areas, take a 1.5h drive from Cape Town to Elgin and experience a different wine experience in that wine region.
8) Freedom Park
Bring out your inner child and burn some birthday calories at Freedom Park. This is an indoor adventure park with trampolines, climbing walls, ninja courses etc. This spot is for all ages and energy levels.
Play for free ON the day of your birthday for 1 hour (contact the team to find out more).
9) Waterfront Duck Tour
Yes, the vehicle turns into a boat for visitors to experience land and water fun. This hour-long adventure drives through the roads in the Waterfront and floats in the harbour, educating guests about wildlife/ ecology and local history.
Celebrate your birthday with the team on your birthday, with at least 1 full-paying adult or child guest.
PS: The duck is currently in for repairs – contact the team to see when they’ll be operating again.
10) Cool Runnings Tobagganing
Feeling like some adrenaline fun on your birthday? This is it! Experience going down a half pipe in a bobsled, in Africa’s first downhill toboggan track. You can adjust the speed yourself to go as fast or as slow as you like. There is a restaurant to enjoy after the adventure-filled day.
Cool Runnings have a free birthday ride during your birthday month – remember to take your physical SA ID with & contact the team beforehand for any queries.
11) Sea Point UpCycle Bike Ride
A bicycle ride along the ocean front with the smells of fresh air & a sense of calmness = how we felt on this outing. Stop along the way to enjoy the views, take some content and for a coffee or picnic stop.
Celebrate your birthday with UpCycles for 1 hour free ride on your birthday (make sure to take your ID with).
PS: Do your parents need something fun to do? Totally telling our parents about their pensioner special where pensioners get a 20% discount on all rides – how cute!
12) Total Ninja
Don’t underestimate this – will test your fitness levels! Total Ninja is an indoor and inflatable adventure park designed for children and adults. Great for birthday celebrations, team buildings or just a fun outing with friends and family. Spend 1 hour free with Total Ninja on your birthday.
13) Galileo Open Air Cinema
The Galileo is a movie set up outside, at different venues, serving foods and drinks. The venues range from wine estates, gardens & parks. We suggest opting for the tickets that come with chairs and blankets & to take layers of clothing with – you never know with Cape Town weather! This is a must do outing! We try go every year 😊
If your birthday falls in the movie season (October – May), you can score a free movie during your birthday month. Due to the movies being shown outdoors, they only run during the warmer months. Sorry for you if your birthday is from June – September 😉
14) Birthdays = eat whatever you feel like
Having PCOS / PMOS, we are quite strict with our eating plan during the week. Birthdays are an exception – this is the day we spoil ourselves on the foods we usually don’t eat. (Milktart from Crazy Daizy is our GO TO birthday “cake”!)
Anyways, here are a few places that offer freebies on your special day:
- Kauai: Free smoothie on their app – still on the healthy side to balance the sugary treats…
- Mugg n Bean: Coffee and cake – get a free slice of cake on your birthday
- Spur: Kids’ under 12 = free birthday meal voucher when registered on the Spur Family Card profile & Chico the clowns. YUM.
- Krispy Kreme: Loyalty app members can score a free dozen Original Glazed donuts when ordering a dozen standard donuts.
Go on & celebrate you
We have learnt over the years, that spending time & creating memories with loved ones, is the actual gift. You don’t need a big budget to have a beautiful day celebrating your life, but also remember companies need to keep running, so there may be some costs to pay and could not be entirely free for everyone.
Once again, I always say we are so so lucky to live in Cape Town, with the natural beauty of the mountain ranges, oceans and city life.
Whether you’re searching for free things to do in Cape Town, planning a memorable birthday celebration or simply wondering what to do in Cape Town for your birthday, we hope this birthday guide inspires you to make the most of your special day. Cape Town offers an incredible variety of birthday activities, from outdoor adventures and cultural experiences to foodie treats and family-friendly outings.
Plan ahead, take advantage of the freebies, celebrate life and remember to take too many pictures to look back on.
We were sick with flu this year, so unfortunately didn’t do any of these for our birthday, so we will have to make up for the whole week of our birthday next year!
Happy Birthday to you. I hope it’s a beautiful one.
Julia
